Jacob deGrom is reportedly trending in a positive direction as the Texas Rangers star works his way back from injury.

Injuries have been an unfortunate storyline of the Texas Rangers’ 2024 season thus far. deGrom is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery. The good news is that deGrom is “progressing well” in his rehab, according to Kennedi Landry of MLB.com.

Landry also reports that Rangers general manager Chris Young believes deGrom is targeting an August return. Texas is currently hovering around the .500 mark, but they expect to compete for a division title and try to defend their World Series title. Having a superstar like deGrom return for the stretch run would be an instant upgrade.

Jacob deGrom Injury Update: Rehab “Progressing Well”

When healthy, the 35-year-old is one of the best pitchers in the sport. He signed with the Rangers before the 2023 season and began the campaign on a high note. deGrom pitched to the tune of a strong 2.67 ERA across six starts before it was revealed that he needed Tommy John surgery. deGrom has not made more than 15 starts in a season since 2019, which also happens to be when he won his most recent Cy Young Award.

It is difficult to predict what version of deGrom the Rangers will receive once he returns. At 35 years old and fresh off such an intense surgery recovery, deGrom may require some time to find his footing at the big league level once again. Nevertheless, Texas will unquestionably benefit from his return.

At the moment, the Rangers trail the Seattle Mariners by 1 1/2 games in the American League West. Texas has a 23-22 record, as they have endured multiple ups and downs in 2024. It is difficult to find consistency when injuries are constantly impacting a roster. The Rangers refuse to use it as an excuse, though.

Jacob deGrom will not return from injury for at least a few more months. Still, it is encouraging to learn that he is trending in a positive direction.
