Pirates Conclude Spring Training with 4-3 Win Over Blue Jays

The Pittsburgh Pirates wrapped up their 2024 spring training slate with a 4-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays at LECOM Park on Monday.

The Pirates (13-16-1) fell into an early 1-0 hole when Cavan Biggio doubled home Kevin Kiermaier in the top of the second inning.

Henry Davis erased Toronto’s lead with an RBI-double to left field in the fourth inning. Rowdy Tellez put the Pirates ahead by a run later in the fourth on an infield single.

The Blue Jays (13-17-2) evened the score in the top of the fifth inning when Damiano Palmegiani connected on a solo home run to left-center off of reliever Ryan Borucki.

With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Jake Lamb drove in a pair with a base hit to put the Pirates back ahead 4-2.

Former Pirates designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach brought Toronto back within a run in the top of the eighth with an RBI-single. Wily Peralta closed out the win with a scoreless ninth inning.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

  • Marco Gonzales was solid in his final tune-up. The left-hander allowed one run on three hits in three innings pitched. He didn’t issue a walk and struck out two.
  • Eric Lauer threw two scoreless innings and struck out three batters in his spring debut. Toronto had one hit against him.
  • Jake Lamb went 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs. Ke’Bryan Hayes went 2 for 2 with a run scored. He continues spring training with a .412 batting average.
  • Henry Davis hit his third double of the spring and drove in a run. He finished the afternoon 1 for 2.

UP NEXT

  • The next time the Pittsburgh Pirates step on the field, it will count. They open up their 2024 season against the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park on Thursday. Mitch Keller will make his second-consecutive opening day start for the Pirates. He will be opposite left-hander Jesús Luzardo. First pitch: 4:10 ET.
